Shaw Stone purchase the first SX5 5 interpolated axis fully
automated CNC saw in the UK

We took delivery of the state of the art SX5 manufactured by Scandinvent in Sweden in November 2009.The SX5 follows Scandinvent’s tradition of brilliant innovation for simple operation. The SX5 ensures high production and efficient stone fabrication of granite worktops and is one of the most technologically advance saws on the market.

The interpolated axes allow the SX5 to cut in any direction, with all axes working together. The saw, together with Scandinvent’s own software, ScandSOFT™, means we can cut almost any shape automatically, in one program including curves which really has to be seen to be believed.

The biggest advantage of this saw over tradition bridge saws used by many fabricators is accuracy. We are no longer relying on the sawyer lining up cuts by eye using physical templates but instead programming the saw to cut using digital templates taken using our digital templating machine from market leaders ‘Proline’. This means that if the angle to cut is 89.4 degrees then the saw will cut 89.4 and not 90 as most sawyers would cut. It doesn’t sound much but that small amount can make the difference between a granite worktop just fitting and one fitting perfectly.

Managing Director Robert Shaw said ‘At an investment cost of £80,000 for the saw and a further £15,000 for the Proliner digital templater this is not the cheapest option available but demonstrates our commitment to constantly investing in new technology to improve our products and services. That’s not to say however that we are replacing traditional stone masonry skills but rather combing them with new technology to gain the best of both worlds’.
