Granite Worktops: #1 in Cleanibilty
If you or your customers are concerned about bacterial contamination of your kitchen worktops, it looks like granite worktops or quartz engineered stone is the right choice.
That is what a study by the Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management, a St. Paul Minnesota, USA-based organisation that develops educational research and materials for the retail food industry shows.
The study measured the bacteria resistance capacity of six common kitchen worktop materials. Each worktop was contaminated with E-coli (nearly 2 billion of the microorganisms), washed and rinsed with soap and water following standard cleaning practices. The results are show in the table below.
Reduction in bacteria after washing & rinsing:
Granite: 36,000 to 1
Stainless Steel: 4000 to 1
Concrete: 24000 to 1
Tile: 900 to 1
Wood: 500 to 1
Plastic laminate: 285 to 1
A follow up study evaluated the differences in cleanability of three common unsealed natural stones used for worktops against a quartz engineered stone. Overall, there was no statistical difference in reduction after wash and rinse for any of the four surfaces.
